Canada launches new immigration pathways, targets Nigerian tech talent and others

Canada’s government has introduced new immigration pathways for tech talent in order to enhance the growth of the nation’s dynamic digital ecosystem.

Minister Sean Frazer made a significant announcement at the Collision 2023 event that took place on June 27, 2023.

As a component of their strategic approach, the Canadian government has implemented an “innovation stream.” Fraser explained that a key element of the strategy involved creating an “innovation stream” designed to grant open work permits lasting up to five years to highly skilled professionals in “specific high-demand fields.” Similarly, individuals employed by companies recognized by the government as contributors to the nation’s innovation objectives would also be eligible for work permits of similar duration.

In a 2023 report published by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, Canada secured its position as the foremost choice for immigrant entrepreneurs. This reaffirms Canada’s standing as an attractive destination for those in pursuit of fresh opportunities.

Canada’s new immigration strategy is specifically designed to tackle the skill gap and the scarcity of technological talent in its rapidly expanding and pioneering tech industry, which stands unrivaled as the world’s fastest growing.

Fraser announced that Canada aims to welcome “digital nomads”, permitting individuals working for foreign employers to reside and work in Canada for up to six months. Furthermore, if they receive a job offer during their stay, they will be allowed to continue working in Canada.

In a government statement, it was revealed that applicants can now apply for three-year open work permits, as opposed to the previous one-year permits, which were restricted to the applicant’s startup. Furthermore, these permits will be made available to every member of an entrepreneurial team, rather than being restricted to only the most essential team members.

Fraser also mentioned that open work permits valid for three years will be provided to digital nomads and their families, allowing them to stay in Canada while their applications are being processed.

The newly introduced pathways broaden the horizons for individuals possessing the H-1B specialty occupation visa in the United States. Now, they have the opportunity to seek Canadian work permits and explore study or work permit possibilities for their accompanying family members. Now, they have the opportunity to seek Canadian work permits and explore study or work permit possibilities for their accompanying family members.

The minister also stated that as of July 16, the Canadian work permit program for H-1B visa holders will be available for a duration of one year, or until Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada has received a maximum of 10,000 applications, whichever occurs first. Fraser noted that this initiative is underway despite ongoing discussions about job layoffs in the United States, especially within the technology sector.

Acknowledging the evolving landscape of work, the Tech talent Strategy positions Canada as an appealing destination for digital nomads. Canada boasts an exceptional quality of life, robust tech infrastructure, a diverse and multicultural society, and a welcoming atmosphere, making it an attractive choice for remote workers looking to achieve a harmonious work-life balance.

Canada has launched its groundbreaking Digital Nomad Strategy, extending a warm welcome to remote workers from around the world starting on July 16, 2023. This groundbreaking initiative allows these individuals to enter Canada as visitors and carry out their professional activities for non-Canadian employers. These foreign workers can reside in Canada, contribute to the local economy and immerse themselves in Canadian culture for up to 6 months. Beyond these 6 months, digital nomads are required to obtain a work permit.

Securing an open work permit should now be a straightforward process, thanks to the recent changes designed specifically for knowledge-based tech positions. However, if you plan on staying in Canada for a long period of time, it is highly recommended that you seek the assistance of a knowledgeable Canadian Immigration Lawyer.

From July 5, 2023, onward, Canada will be implementing an exceptional selection process specifically designed for individuals possessing exceptional proficiency in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).If you excel in these subjects, your chances of obtaining permanent residency in Canada will greatly increase.

Speaking fluent French or having a job in specific fields such as healthcare, STEM, trade (like carpentry and plumbing), transportation, or agriculture, can significantly increase your opportunities for success.

But if you don’t fit into these categories, it might take longer for you to get an invitation. There are other alternative ways to apply for immigration to Canada, such as the Federal Skilled Worker, Federal Trades Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Provincial Nominee Program.

As of June 27, 2023, 4,800 people with a certain score were invited, but they didn’t pick any specific program. In the future, they might have more special draws, like for healthcare workers. So, keep an eye on the updates and plan your strategy accordingly.

Canada is making significant efforts to enhance its position as a global leader in emerging technologies by prioritizing the attraction of top talent. The proactive measures implemented in the Tech Talent Strategy will ensure that businesses have the vital talent they need to thrive in an intensely competitive environment.
